  35. WHAT IS SERALINE SCREENSAVER
  36. ----------------------------
  37.  
  38. Seraline Screensaver is a screensaver for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
  39.  
  40. Seraline randomly combines an extensive range of graphic effects to produce
  41. its images. Some are fast, some slow. Many of the resulting images are
  42. strikingly beautiful, but some may not appeal. You can just let it run, and it
  43. will continue to change, or you can press 'c' to restart the graphics.  You
  44. can also press '1', '2' or '3' to change the speed and type of graphics.  A
  45. huge variety of images are produced over time, so please try it for at least a
  46. few days.

  48. Supports 16 color VGA, 256 color SVGA, and 24-bit color.

  51. INSTALLATION
  52. ------------
  53.  
  54. Windows 3.1
  55.  
  56. 1. From the directory you have decompressed into, copy the file seraline.scr
  57.    to your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  58.  
  59. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  60.  
  61. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  62.  
  63. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Seraline.
  64.  
  65. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  66.  
  67. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  68.    configuration options.
  69.

  71. Windows 95
  72.  
  73. 1. From the directory you have decompressed into, copy the file seraline.scr
  74.    into your windows\system directory, usually c:\windows\system.
  75.  
  76. 2. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  77.  
  78. 3. Double click on the Display icon.
  79.  
  80. 4. Click on the Screensaver tab.
  81.  
  82. 5. In the Screen Saver list, select Seraline.
  83.  
  84. 6. Click Preview to run the screensaver.
  85.  
  86. 7. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  87.    configuration options.

  90. Once you have Seraline running, you do not need to keep the other files on
  91. your system. i.e. you just need seraline.scr installed in your Windows or
  92. Windows\System directory.

  94. SETUP OPTIONS
  95. -------------
  96.  
  97. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  98. screen by pressing the Options button.
  99.  
  100. Available options:
  101.  
  102. SPEED
  103.     1    Slow Mode - Displays full screen fractals and similar designs, less
  104.          'messier' than other speeds.
  105.  
  106.     2    Normal speed - uses all drawings.
  107.  
  108.     3    Fast Mode - uses just the faster drawings, changing more often to
  109.      make it more watchable.
  110.  
  111. SAFE MODE
  112.     Select this option if Seraline occasionally crashes with a General
  113.     Protection Fault, or hangs. When selected, Seraline will avoid graphics
  114.     which have caused problems with some video drivers.
  115.  
  116.     Safe Mode is ON by default. You can de-select it and see if Seraline runs
  117.     without any crashes or hangs on your machine. If there are, then you
  118.     should re-select Safe Mode.
  119.  
  120.  
  121. REGISTERED VERSION OPTIONS
  122. --------------------------
  123.  
  124. HIDE MOUSE
  125.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  126.     screensaver is running.
  127.  
  128. STAY ON TOP
  129.     This is useful when you have a menu bar, clock, or other program which
  130.     normally stays visible over all other windows, including screensavers.
  131.     Select this option to have Seraline cover these windows. Its use is not
  132.     recommended if you have other programs running which can periodically
  133.     display a message (such as Mail, a Reminder or other scheduled program),
  134.     as you will not see these messages. Also in these cases, the other program
  135.     will have control of the keyboard, even though it is not visible, so
  136.     pressing Escape will clear the message rather than stopping Seraline, and
  137.     you will not get to see the message.
  138.  
  139. IGNORE MOUSE FOR WAKE-UP
  140.     Selecting this option means only use of the keyboard will stop the
  141.     screensaver. It's useful if your mouse likes to move of its own accord, or
  142.     is easily bumped. Not recommended if you are also using Stay on Top.
  143.  
  144. IGNORE VOTES
  145.     Useful when you may have been controlling Seraline through a series of
  146.     votes (see below), but you would temporarily like Seraline to run in
  147.     default mode.
  148.  
  149. USE SERASPEL
  150.     SeraSpel(TM) is a spelling unchecker, which makes mistakes in the spelling
  151.     of text messages as they are displayed.  Why?  Wel, wyh nog?
  152.  
  153. TEXT MESSAGES
  154.     You can have your own messages periodically displayed by entering a
  155.     series of phrases, each separated by a semi-colon, such as "text=My
  156.     message;Second message;Third;fourth". The messages are displayed at
  157.     random, and not necessarily immediately or every run.
  158.  
  159.  
  160. PASSWORD PROTECTION
  161. -------------------
  162.     Password protection is only available in this version for Windows 3.1,
  163.     because under Windows 95, Control+Alt+Delete allows Seraline to be
  164.     cancelled.  The 32-bit version of Seraline allows passwords under Windows
  165.     95.
  166.  
  167.     Warning: the security of your machine is not guaranteed when using the Seraline
  168.     password protection because due to the complexity of the screensaver and
  169.     different machine configurations, there is the possibility that Seraline may
  170.     crash and leave your machine available.
  171.  
  172.  
  173. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  174. ---------------
  175.  
  176. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  177.  
  178. 1,2,3    Selects the speed, as described above under Setup Options.
  179.  
  180. f    The current drawing will Finish. Useful if it appears to be stuck or you
  181.      want it to move on.  So you use it when you want Seraline to do something
  182.      else and you don't want it to wait until it's finished whatever it's
  183.      currently doing.
  184.  
  185. c    Similar purpose to the 'f' key. Seraline will be re-started,
  186.      and also the Colors being used are changed and the screen is cleared.
  187.  
  188. k    Keeps running with the current colors, & avoids clearing the screen so
  189.      that the image builds on itself as much as possible. (Registered version
  190.      only)
  191.  
  192. o    Displays an order form, which can be printed (Unregistered version only).
  193.  
  194. p    Pressing p will cause Seraline pause at the end of the current
  195.      drawing,  and not continue until you press 'p' again. This is useful, for
  196.      example,if Seraline is drawing something slowly, and you would like to
  197.      see how it ends up, but you have to leave the room for a while. Or if you
  198.      would like the chance to copy it to the clipboard when it's finished
  199.      before it gets overwritten. It doesn't pause immediately, but at the end
  200.      of the current drawing. When you have finished with the paused screen,
  201.      press 'p' again to start Seraline off again. (Registered version only)
  202.  
  203.  
  204. SAVING IMAGES
  205. -------------
  206.  
  207. Pressing the PrintScreen function key will copy the full screen to the
  208. clipboard, and you can then paste that into a paint program and save the
  209. image. You can then cut an area from the image and use it as a background on a
  210. Web page.
  211.  
  212.  
  213. IMAGEVOTE (Registered Version Only)
  214. ---------
  215.  
  216. Press the following keys while Seraline is running to bias it towards images
  217. you prefer:
  218.  
  219. F4   Press F4 to vote FOR an image you like.
  220.  
  221. F5   Press F5 to vote AGAINST an image you like.
  222.  
  223. Shift+F5 resets to the system defaults.
  224.  
  225. Voting is a gradual process - it provides a general guideline only to Seraline,
  226. such as more or less text, faster or slower drawings. Colors are not included
  227. in the voting. Seraline keeps track of the last few drawings done, and votes are
  228. allocated with the later drawings receiving (or losing) more votes.  So at
  229. times you may be voting for something you may at other times be voting
  230. against, but over time, it is expected that the items you prefer will become
  231. more prominent.

  233. So, for example, if you like fractals, when you see one, press F4, and
  234. Seraline will do fractals slightly more often. You would continue to vote for
  235. fractals when they appear so that they appear more & more often.  Similarly,
  236. F5 is used to reduce the frequency of the drawings which were used to produce
  237. the screen that is showing when you press F5.
  238.  
  239. Pressing F4 can also be used to increase the display frequency of your text
  240. messages.
  241.  
  242.  
  243. DISPLAYING BITMAPS (Registered Version Only)
  244. ------------------
  245.  
  246. Bitmap files created with PaintBrush, or other paint programs, can be
  247. displayed periodically by Seraline, and then they are merged and colored with
  248. the other graphics. For example, you can have your company logo or other
  249. advertising material displayed, or perhaps a multi-line name & address which
  250. is too long for the text-message-display option. Having scanned photos
  251. displayed and distorted can also be fun, particularly portraits.
  252.  
  253. The Options screen contains a button which brings up a Bitmap entry screen,
  254. which lets you enter the name of a disk directory. Any bitmap files in that
  255. directory will be displayed at random. Only files with the extension ".bmp"
  256. are shown.
  257.  
  258. When running in 256 color mode, the bitmaps will be displayed using the colors
  259. Seraline is using at the time, and may appear quite different to the original.  To
  260. To display the bitmaps using their own colors, you must run in 32K, 64K or 16M
  261. color mode.

  263. The bitmap screen also has an option called "Show Often". This will cause
  264. Seraline to use the bitmaps in every run.

  268. REGISTRATION & BENEFITS
  269. -----------------------
  270.  
  271. Seraline Screensaver is "try before you buy" software, and is provided with a
  272. free 14-day evaluation period.
  273.  
  274. When you register Seraline, it will
  275.     * display its full range of graphics over time
  276.     * allow the use of run-time keystroke options listed above
  277.     * allow password protection (Windows 3.1 only)
  278.     * enable the mouse options
  279.     * display your own text messages
  280.     * use ImageVote to bias Seraline towards images you like
  281.     * allow you to display your own bitmaps, such as logos & photos
  282.     * remove registration reminder messages...
  283.  
  284. The screensaver occasionally displays registration reminder messages like
  285. "Please register Seraline".  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be
  286. mailed, faxed or emailed a code which will remove these messages. This
  287. registration code is entered into the Registration field on the Setup screen.

  289. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  290. development of additional graphics and features.
  291.

  314. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri. An order
  315. form can also be displayed and printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or
  316. by pressing 'o' while Seraline is running.

  318. See the following section regarding temporary registration if you are mailing
  319. your payment.

  321. Alternatively, you may register Seraline on-line on Compuserve. After logging
  322. on to Compuserve, enter GO SWREG, and request ID 4667.

  324. In order to keep the cost of Seraline low, diskettes are not mailed as part of
  325. the base registration.  The latest version is available on various on-line
  326. services as described below.
  327.  
  328. These prices and conditions are valid until 30th June 1997 for this version,
  329. and are subject to change with future versions.
  330.  
  331. If you have already paid a fee to others (eg disk or CD vendors) to obtain
  332. this evaluation copy, that fee was for their copying and distribution
  333. services, rather than a payment for continued use of the program, and the
  334. software author does not receive any part of that fee.

  337. CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS
  338. --------------------
  339.  
  340. Credit card payments may be made using VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  341. Bankcard. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri,
  342. which can then be faxed or mailed to Seraline. An order form can also be
  343. printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or by pressing 'o' while Seraline
  344. is running.  The details required are your name, Credit Card type, card
  345. number, card expiry date and your signature.  These details can be mailed, or
  346. faxed to Seraline in Australia +61-2-9879-4481.
  347.  
  348. Note that credit cards are billed at exactly $19.95 Australian. For other
  349. currencies, the amount appearing on your card will depend on the foreign
  350. exchange rate at the time. For example, at rates current in June 1996, this
  351. converts to an amount varying around US$15.

  353.  
  354. ON-LINE REGISTRATION
  355. --------------------
  356.  
  357. The only way we can accept payment over the internet is by email. But due to
  358. the number of different computers messages pass through on the internet, email
  359. security can be a concern.
  360.  
  361. We support PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption for sending credit card
  362. details securely by email.  To receive our public key, send an email message
  363. to porum@ozemail.com.au with "send public key" as the subject. On receipt of
  364. our key, create a text message containing your name, credit card type (VISA,
  365. Mastercard, or Australian Bankcard), credit card number and expiry date. Use
  366. the separately available PGP software package to encrypt the message, and
  367. email it to porum@ozemail.com.au.
  368.  
  369. If you don't have PGP, you may like to split the details over several
  370. email messages. Avoid mention of words like "credit card", and use an
  371. abbreviation for the credit card type, eg V for Visa or M for Mastercard.
  372. Send the expiry date in a separate message, and split the card number over
  373. several messages, but ensure there is some sequence number that makes it
  374. obvious to us what the sequence is.

  376. Emailing credit card details using any method is at your own risk.

  379. TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
  380. ----------------------

  382. Another way to be registered quickly is to mail us a check, and at the same
  383. time, send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au letting us know you have
  384. sent a check. A temporary code which expires will be promptly emailed back
  385. to you. When your payment is received, a full registration code will
  386. be sent.

  389. LICENSE
  390. -------

  392. Seraline Screensaver is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by
  393. Seraline Pty Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected
  394. by Australian copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  395.  
  396. The registration fee will license Seraline Screensaver for use on any
  397. computers in your home, and on one computer at work on which you are the
  398. main user.
  399.  
  400. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  401. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  402. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  403. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.
  404.  
  405. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile, disassemble,
  406. otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program except as
  407. provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result in
  408. immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  410. Registered users will be licensed to use, free of charge, any version 4.nn of
  411. Seraline, and they will be notified by email of any significant 4.nn updates.
  412. Registered users will also be advised by email when the major upgrade to
  413. version 5 becomes available.

  431. Please note that although Seraline is released with no known defects that
  432. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  433. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  434. video drivers and fonts.  You should use the evaluation period to check that
  435. Seraline does not cause problems with your system. See KNOWN PROBLEMS below
  436. for some work-arounds. If it crashes each day, there may be an
  437. incompatibility, although this shouldn't cause any other problems apart from
  438. stopping the screensaver.  If it crashes Windows, stop running Seraline.

  456. VERSION NUMBER EXPLANATION
  457. --------------------------
  458.  
  459. Seraline's version number is in four parts: A.B.C.D
  460.  
  461. A    The major version number - changed for major upgrades. Notification is
  462.      sent by email to registered users.
  463.  
  464. B    Minor version number - changed when there have been significant
  465.      enhancements to the graphics.
  466.  
  467. C    Minor changes to the graphics. Usually only uploaded to the Web page.
  468.  
  469. D    Minor changes to the documentation.

  473. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  474. --------------
  475.  
  476. Crashes or hangs are unlikely, but there are a lot of permutations, and
  477. Seraline Screensaver is not guaranteed to never crash.
  478.  
  479. Some video drivers seem to get a GP Fault when too much stretching or
  480. shrinking is applied to fonts or images. If you find you get several GP
  481. Faults, then try selecting Safe Mode on the Options screen under Control
  482. Panel/Desktop/Setup.
  483.  
  484. Any screensaver as calculation-intensive as Seraline may slow down other running
  485. tasks such as printing or faxes. If there is such a problem with printing, you
  486. can try increasing the priority of the printing by running Print Manager from
  487. the Main group in Program Manager, and selecting the menu Options/Background
  488. Printing, and select High priority.
